Straight port, minor cropping on panels one and two. Content/impact preserved. It helps that this is one of the few "full size" pages in the scene - along with the redone 5 through 9. The rest were all 1800x2400 and as such were scaled up... and are about to be scaled back down again. Production didn't move to 2250x3000 until Clarity. Yeah. One of the yay points for the second edition reformatting - every single page is 1849x2774@300dpi (which cleanly downsamples to the web 600x900 - as does 1850x2775, but for whatever reason I locked into one pixel smaller and I'm sticking with it, dammit*), has the same font sizes, the same gutters, the same yadda yadda yadda. The pages are lower rez than TV (2250x... something- TD1E width, adjusted for height to 6x9) or DCR (something like 400dpi), but like both projects, TD2E is internally consistent in a way that TD1E never was.

* For the first four chapters, anyway. Since this thing cleanly splits into two segments, I don't have any qualms making minor template adjustments going into the "back nine." Right now, I'll be happy just to get there. Spending my nights and weekends re-photoshopping five year old documents may be the right thing to do for The Dualist, but I'm here to tell you - it FUCKING SUCKS. Tedium, I thought I knew ye.

Edited 20050526 : Fixed a MAJOR problem with scene-to-scene transitioning in terms of color and layout, and visually connected polarity with distortion. The anatomy is a complete train wreck, but I like it - I drew it at home and I INKED PART OF IT WHILE I WAS POOPING.

This whole replacement thing was necessary for a couple of resons. The first is that polarity was supposedly an "experiment" and at the time I was thinking about labelling scenes and doing titles and sub-covers for them, etceteras - polarity was the test case and it never really panned out... so the end result, pre-Edit, is a scene that just does not fit into ATC in any way shape or form - either through lack of skill or other issues. This thing has, in the course of four chapters, manifested its own aesthetic and design sense and is horribly unforgiving of any attempts to violate or alter the means in which it insists on being expressed. So.

The second reason is that callback -8- is a "left" page and polarity -1- is a "right", which gave you THIS with the old layouts:

atc_d_208_209a.jpg

And THIS for the new layout:

atc_d_208_209b_.jpg

Which, while not without its flaws, flows a hell of a lot smoother. It probably helps that the new pages were completed less than 21 hours apart, while there was a period of a little over 21 DAYS in between the old set.

And yes, the arms on both pages are fucked. Given the choice between doing it Wrong But Neat or doing something I could actually draw but that wouldn't fit at all, well.... yeah. Too many artists stick with shitass stock angles and tame layouts because it's something they know they can do, and the result is pretty goddamned boring to look at. I'd like to think that's a trap I'm trying to avoid, but for the most part that isn't really the case- my "comfort range" happens to be different is all, and it's just as hard to break out of it. Difference between me and them is that I want to break out of it, as opposed to hit my page count so I can make car payments and get on with my life.

It's always the same
I'm the only one who's always left to blame
Take what you can take
Hurt is your only idea of a game
To break away
I don't have that within me
And I'm not your prey
So I bite the hand that feeds me

When all you do is break me
And put me
You put me in a cage

When I look in the mirror
All that I see
A zoo animal that wants to be free
Just get away, get away from me
'Cause I'll never be who you want me to be
No

It's always the same
It's not easy to keep myself contained
Sit back and relax
How can I when I'm going down in flames?

'Cause all you do is break me
And put me
You put me in a cage

Get away get away get away get away

All you do is break me
And put me
You put me in a cage

When I look in the mirror
I just want to be free
Want to be free
I just want to be free

Originally intended to be based from photographic source. Constructed by hand in Photoshop after the untimely suicide of the old powerbook that serves as the Quicktake 150 hardware interface.

The second sequence of The Dualist : Reentry begins.

Style is up in the air at the moment. Polarity requires a specific feel that separates it visually from Callback or chapter one. This will either Work or it Won't- the answer will be found in the coming weeks.

It should be noted that this is a combination of a splash/title page and the actual establishing panels of the scene (hallway and staircase). The original layout called for something decidedly different- this is, in all ways, an improvement, specifically in terms of the aesthetics and economy of construction.
